Born in 1962 in Fort Worth, Texas, Kevin Townson first picked up the electric guitar to play rock and roll. From 1978 to 1983, he performed across North Texas, building his stage experience and passion for music.
In the late 1970s, Kevin’s musical direction changed forever. While watching a televised performance of Andrés Segovia at the White House for President Jimmy Carter, he was struck by the power and beauty of classical guitar.
“I was so taken back by the fact that this guy must be 80 years old and he’s playing guitar (very well) to people that were absolutely spellbound. I decided that’s what I wanted to do when I grew up.”
Determined to master the art, Kevin began formal studies in 1985 with Tom Johnson at the University of North Texas, earning both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Classical Guitar Performance.
Today, Kevin performs extensively as both a soloist and with his Latin-jazz group, The Kevin Townson Band, bringing audiences his distinctive blend of flamenco, jazz, and pop. He has released three albums:
Alongside performing, Kevin has been dedicated to teaching guitar since 1984. For over 23 years, he has introduced children to music through the Childbloom Guitar Program.
“I really love teaching this method. It’s wonderful to see kids’ eyes light up when they learn something they thought was impossible. It’s such a fun way to connect with young people and hopefully inspire them to aim higher.”-Kevin Townson
TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
My teaching philosophy is very simple. Provide a safe and positive learning environment within the studio, as well as, present the student with the appropriate material needed for long term musical and technical growth. Students must have a clear, focused and obtainable lesson plan and assignments need to be presented in a clear and concise manner to not only the student but the parent as well. Communication between everyone is also very important in order to avoid confusion and conflicts about the lesson, the home practice and any goals which need to be focused on for the lesson. As a student progresses, there are more challenges that arise and it’s important to encourage the student to have more and more ownership over their tasks.
